Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Druker, executive chef and co-owner of Massachusetts eatery the New England Soup Factory, joins veteran Boston-based food writer Silverstein to weave personal stories of the region with mouthwatering recipes in this instant classic, a must-have for soup lovers. Standards like Beef and Barley, Split Pea with Bacon and Potatoes, and Hot and Sour Soup sit comfortably next to innovative combinations such as Butternut Squash Soup with Calvados, Gorgonzola Cheese and Prosciutto or Yellow Tomato Soup with Jasmine Rice. Aside from the stock-making, which Druker and Silverstein heartily endorse, most of the soups and accompanying sides come together in minutes, producing a quick, hearty meal that few dishes can match for sheer satisfaction. Many recipes highlight just a handful of ingredients (Roasted Yellow Beet and Pear Soup with Blue Cheese; Sweet and Sour Cabbage Soup with Dill; Apple, Onion and Cheddar Soup) and call for little else, keeping recipes simple, costs low and flavors bold. Recipes are grouped intuitively by theme (cheese, chicken, chowders, etc.) as well as by season, ensuring that the perfect bowl of soup is never far away.

chick n rice flu chaser is divine![]()
I have never written a review before, but after reading a negative review that specifically mentioned the chicken n rice flu chaser soup, i was compelled! I wish I didn't have to make it again, but my husband and I finished our big pot last wkend and I need more! Someone mentioned the unusual mix flavors ended up tasting weird (lemon, cinammon, garlic, etc) , I'd say "complex" in all the right ways. Sweet, tart, spicy and hot. So much better than your average chicken soup. Going to the market this afternoon to get started on pot #2!
If you like soup, get this book!![]()
My family loves this book. Every recipe we make from it is better than the last. The author tells you how to make really high-quality soup from scratch -- the kind you really can't get just anywhere. She gives you tips that really make a huge difference in the flavor of your soup. (For what it is worth, though, realize that some of these tips are time-consuming. These is not a cook-it-quick recipe book, by any means.) My grandmother was a New England native and a maker of homemade soups -- and these recipes rival and sometimes surpass hers. You won't find thousands of recipes here -- but you will find recipes that are appropriate for each season and each "craving." There are broth-based soups, cream-based soups, fruit-based soups, vegetable-based soups. I have several soup books, and they all have merit. But if someone forced me to give away all the others and keep only one, this is the one I would keep.
SUPER SOUPER!!![]()
BOUGHT THIS AS A GIFT FOR NEWLYWEDS, BUT WAS SO IMPRESSED THAT I GOT ANOTHER ONE FOR MYSELF. RECIPES ARE EASY TO FOLLOW AND GENERALLY DON'T REQUIRE ANY EXOTIC INGREDIENTS. TRY THE GREEK CHICKEN, LEMON AND ORZO SOUP RIGHT AWAY AND FOLLOW WITH THE EGGPLANT PARMESAN SOUP. GOTTA GO, MY MOUTH IS WATERING!!
