After studying the question, I had settled on going to Zackry GH. Then in Penang I met a really delightful couple from Manchester who said they were also going to Langkawi and staying at Gecko Guest House. Gecko was recommended in Lonely Planet, which generally means a place is a pig sty, as it goes straight downhill or gets sold once it makes the book. But they said they had friends who just stayed there and spoke well of it. Anyway, I decided to go to Gecko and maybe meet up with my friends, got a share taxi from the ferry, and got off there. It was as***hole-- I didn't even go in. So after wandering in the midday heat I settled for one night into a business hotel that was clean, comfortable, sterile, and frigidly devoid of character. Next morning I set out for Zackry's. Now Zackry's is a bit tricky to find, but once I got there I knew this was a proper place for a Wandering_man. The rooms are quite small and could be a bit better ventilated, but there is daily maid service and my room was spotless, as were the shared showers, sink, and toilet.
